What is the betting line in football?
Posted by Steve Leighton
Both NCAA College Football and the National Football League have a betting line assigned to each game by the odds makers in Las Vegas. The betting line, also known as the point spread, must be taken into consideration when making a bet on a football game in either league.
The team that the odds makers determine to be the favorite must win by more than the assigned point spread for your wager to payoff. The other team is considered the underdog and must win the game OR lose by less than the assigned point spread for your bet to be a winner.
If the favorite wins by the exact amount of the assigned point spread, then a bet on either the favorite or the underdog is considered to be a "push". A push means that each wager is refunded less the house cut, also known as the "vig" or the "juice". The house cut is usually 10% of the amount wagered.
The majority of the wagering in Vegas on football is done using the betting line or point spread. To be discussed later, another option for football betting is the "money line".
